Located 100miles north of Milwaukee, Appleton lies on the Fox River. Fur traders doing business with local Indians were the first Europeans to inhabit the area before being incorporated in 1853. The paper industry was initially a main stay and with that brought the nation's first hydro-electric station using the Fox River. The city is also home to Lawrence University, a private liberal Arts college founded in 1847. The city is also the alleged birthplace of Harry Houdini and Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteran.
