Owensboro Seeing More Interest in Young Workers Coming to the City

Smothers Park, and the year old Owensboro Convention Center are credited for helping draw more people downtown and keeping them there. To quote an old commercial: image is everything. "I really think I can live here, I can move here. Owensboro economic development officials say the downtown improvements, including the new hotels, convention center, and stores, are helping bring and keep young workers in the city.  A recent Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development report showed Daviess County in the top ten for job growth last year.

Owensboro Man Charged with Rape

- Trooper Begley was investigating a report of a run away juvenile from Sacramento, KY. Troopers and Owensboro Police were able to locate the juvenile with Benjamin Stallings at a hotel in Owensboro. The juvenile and Mr. Stallings admitted to having a sexual relationship, and smoking marijuana in the hotel room. Stalling was arrested and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center. Mr. Stallings was charged with: Rape 3rd, Custodial Interference, Unlawful transaction w/minor 2nd, Poss.

Hundreds of firefighters head to Owensboro for school

- About 1,200 firefighters from seven states are heading to Owensboro for three days of training next week. The Green River Firefighters Association's 2015 Bryant Stiles Officers School runs from Feb. 20 to 22. Daviess County Fire Chief Dwane Smeathers is first vice president of the Green River Firefighters Association. He told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer that all the training will be in classrooms. The school is named for Bryant Stiles, a former assistant chief with the McLean Volunteer Central Fire District who died in 2012.


OWENSBORO, KY - As development continues to expand East on Kentucky 54 in Owensboro, businesses are taking advantage of the growth. Great Harvest Bread Company will be the first tenant in the new Lake Forest Town Center on Springview Drive and Kentucky 54. This is the second location for Great Harvest Bread Company, which has had a location on Frederica Street since 2000. Owner, Greg Garrard says they've been looking to expand for a while. Garrard says the new location will be more of a cafe style shop. They plan to move in sometime in May.

Owensboro House Fire Sets Alarms Off at OHS

Students at Owensboro High School had to briefly leave the school just as classes were about to start. As firefighters worked one emergency on Phillips Court, another potential one started nearly two blocks away at Owensboro High School. "It happened at a time that was kind of chaotic," says David Johnson of Owensboro Public Schools. Students were moved to the other gym after spending a few minutes waiting outside.  Owensboro Fire Chief Steve Mitchell says fluctuations in water levels can set alarms off.

Carnival Craze hits Owensboro in the spring

UPDATED: Weekend collision claims one life in Pike County

Pike County police report that Patrick Montgomery, 56, of Owensboro was traveling eastbound on State Road 64 at the crest of a hill near County Road 650 East just before 2:55 p.m. Saturday. Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene. Both semi drivers refused medical treatment. State Road 64 was closed for 5 hours Saturday afternoon and evening as the crash scene was cleared. Indiana State Police, the Pike County Coroner's Office, Pike County EMS, and the Dubois County Hazardous Materials Team among others all assisted.

Owensboro woman facing charges following three-vehicle wreck

OWENSBORO, KY - An Owensboro woman is facing several charges following a three vehicle accident. The crash happened at 10:51 a.m. Sunday on E. Legion Blvd. At J R Miller Blvd. Police say 32-year-old Dawn R. Fulkerson was traveling west on E. Legion Blvd. In a Jeep Grand Cherokee. According to the crash investigation, the Jeep passed through a stop sign and struck a Ford Mustang that was traveling south on J R Miller Blvd. Fulkerson is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, DUI-2nd Degree, no insurance, and two counts of criminal trespass.

Panel considers three road improvement projects in Daviess Co.

DAVIESS CO., KY - The Owensboro-Daviess County Metropolitan's technical advisory committee approved a motion to study the cost of three road improvement ideas in Daviess County. GRADD Associate Director for Transportation Keith Harpole presented the ideas to the committee at a meeting Wednesday morning. Harpole wants to study the cost of adding a left turn lane on Old Hartford Road at East 26th Street in Owensboro, and extending the off-ramps for people getting on the Audubon and Natcher Parkways. "We see a lot of close calls.

New President at Calhoun Community College wants a master plan for campus by the end of the year

' There's a new leader running Calhoun Community College. Jim Klauber of Owensboro, Kentucky, is now in place to lead the state's largest two-year college. "It's a great privilege to be president of Calhoun Community College," said Klauber. Klauber is the 5th president of the college. All in all, Klauber is happy with how things are going and is looking forward to making things better for the nearly 11,000 students. He added that he wants to improve the technical program there and he's aware, now, of the shortage of parking on campus.
