Parolee Back Behind Bars After SWAT Standoff in Whittier

A parolee is back behind bars this morning after an overnight SWAT standoff in Whittier. Deputies received a call at around 7:30 p.m. that an ex-convict had a gun at his apartment in the 11900 block of Inez Street, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. When they arrived on the scene the man allegedly refused to surrender. They had to evacuate the apartment complex as the standoff began. Just before 1 a.m. Friday Sheriffs Special Enforcement Bureau teams fired tear gas into the apartment and arrested the man, who is yet to be identified.

Car Smashes into Dialysis Center in Whittier

A wrecked white Toyota Avalon sat propped on a sidewalk in front of a dialysis center in Whittier where it was reported the driver crashed into the building and fled the scene. The Whittier Kidney Dialysis Center at the 1600 block of Whittier Boulevard sustained major damage at about 4:50 a.m. when the crash occurred. Officials from the Whittier Police Department said they were looking for the driver and no arrest had been made as of 7 a.m. No injuries from persons inside the building were reported.

Born June 25, 1958, Mike was the third child of James Virgil Dooley and Patricia Dooley Batton. Survivors include his wife, Kathy, and her loving family of brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, and their families; his sister, Vikki Bowers of Milledgeville; and great-nephew, Kyle. He was preceded in death by his father, and his mother, Patricia Dooley Batton; his brother, Danny Dee Dooley; and a stepbrother, Richard Batton. A celebration of Mike's life with family and friends will be Friday at White Emerson Mortuary in Whittier.

Man with machete leads police on pursuit in Whittier

A man suspected of assaulting another man with a machete in Whittier led police on a short pursuit Monday afternoon, authorities said. At about 2 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's station in Norwalk received a report of a possible assault with a deadly weapon in the area of Carmenita and Meyer roads, said Sgt. Jose Navares. Deputies responding to the scene made contact with the suspect's vehicle at Carmenita and Leffingwell roads where they attempted to stop the car, Navares said. Navares said the victim was unharmed.

Off-duty Whittier police officer fires on fleeing suspect who broke into his home

The officer-involved shooting took place in the 3200 block of Military Avenue about 10 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. John Marquez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Station. "The officer was in his home, sitting in the living room when he saw a male black about 20 years old wearing dark clothing standing in his kitchen," Marquez said. LAPD officers set up a perimeter and began a search of the area, but did not turn up the intruder. How the intruder got into the home was not immediately clear, Marquez said.

Officials investigate death of man at Whittier home

WHITTIER >> Police checking on the welfare of a senior citizen found him dead inside his home Thursday afternoon, officials said. Officers responded to the 13600 block of Putnam Street about 2 p.m. after someone asked them to check on the resident, Whittier police Officer Bradley White said. "Upon arrival, officers discovered a male, approximately 60-years-old, deceased," White said. The investigation was ongoing, however there were no overt signs of foul play, White said.

West Whittier robber wore pink pajama bottoms, blue ski mask, carried toy gun

Officials said the victim thought it was a joke. Sgt. Steve Dodson of the sheriff's Pico Rivera station said the suspect entered the lobby of the Motel 6 in the 8200 block of Pioneer Boulevard in West Whittier at 4:25 a.m.. He walked up to the clerk and demanded the cash from the register. "The clerk though he was joking based on his apparel," Dodson said. When the clerk didn't do anything, the sergeant said the suspect showed a gun and demanded money again. The suspect was described as a Latino in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 160 pounds.

Road crew lives with road rage as they install fiber optic line in Whittier

Traffic on Colima Road was backed up at midmorning Wednesday from South Hacienda Boulevard in Hacienda Heights for just over a half mile to Camino Del Sur, where a road crew was at work. "Some people spit at us," said Armondo Garcia, foreman of the work crew. The 2,700 foot stretch they're installing completes a hookup at its terminus near Casino Drive. It means digging a pit every 300 feet, rather than digging a trench for the length of the job, said Garcia. The job should be competed in two weeks, three weeks maximum, he said.

WHITTIER >> Police are seeking a gunman who pistol-whipped a gas station attendant during a robbery Tuesday, authorities said. ONTARIO >> A tattoo artist and Whitter gang member is behind bars accused of a stabbing a man in the back and head earlier this month, Ontario Police officials said Monday. Aranda allegedly stabbed a man on Feb. 6 in the 400 block of Sunkist Street after a woman reportedly called Aranda to remove someone from her home, according to Sgt. Jeff Higbee with the Ontario Police Department. The sister gets into an argument with the victim and tell him to leave. Aranda is being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on $1 million bail.

Woman found fatally shot at Whittier park, suicide suspected

WHITTIER >> A woman was found fatally shot at a Whittier park Saturday in what was initially being investigated as a suicide, police said. The woman, initially described only as 28 years old, died at the scene, Whittier police Lt. She was found about 1:20 p.m. lying on a handball court at Guirardo Park, at Pioneer Boulevard and Orange Drive. Witnesses reported hearing the gunshot, though they didn't realize what it was at the time, Miller said. A 9mm handgun was found near the woman's body. "We believe it to be a suicide," Miller said.

The pep rally was a day before the big varsity basketball game against their rival school, La Serna High School. Friday's game marked the final one of the season and many of the players are seniors.
