Yuma is located in the southwestern corner of Arizona in the Sonoran Desert. It was a major Colorado River crossing for California gold seekers during the California Gold Rush. The area was first known as Colorado City, then Arizona City, and finally Yuma in 1873. It was named after the Yumas, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Yumas were a combination of the Quechan, Cocopahs, and Mohave tribes in the lower Colorado Region.
